Description
The Cross of Saint Francis of Assisi, also known as the San Damiano Cross, is a medieval cross created around 1190 for the small church dedicated to Saint Damian, likely commissioned by a guild of merchants from Assisi. This cross was ‘adopted’ by Saint Francis.
The conversion process of Saint Francis of Assisi was long. During this process, his second great encounter with Christ, of which we have record, took place before the San Damiano Crucifix, when Christ responded to his question and concern with these words: ‘Francis, go and repair my church.’
